Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina advanced to the final of the Australian Open in doubles.
Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina (2) advanced to the final of the Australian Open in doubles defeating Romanian duo Irina Begu and Monica Niculescu (10) in straight sets - 6:4, 6:3.
The match lasted 1 hour and 25 minutes. The Russians hit 1 ace, 21 winners, made 2 double faults and won 4 break points out of 11. Begu and Niculescu hit 1 ace, 12 winners, made 3 double faults and won 1 break point out of 3.
Lena and Kate won with confidence today. They didn't get to finish the match in their favor at once (including the first set), but they managed to avoid excessive nerves.
Vesnina and Makarova repeated their best result at Australian Open - in 2014, they also played in the final where they were defeated by the 1st seed Italian duo Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci — 4:6, 6:3, 5:7. And now their opponents are the 5th seed Timea Babos of Hungary and Kristina Mladenovic of France. Mladenovic has demonstrated an awful losing streak in singles, however, in doubles she got to reach the final.
If Vesnina and Makarova win the final, they will also win the Career Golden Slam, and considering that they used to triumph at the WTA Final as well, they will have all major doubles titles in their record.
