Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina -US Open 2014 doubles champions

Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina teamed up for the first time in the final of the 2008 FedCup, but they began playing together regularly only in 2012. The ladies started showing good team-work soon and the success was not slow to arrive. In the 2012 season they won two titles at WTA Premier tournaments – in Beijing and Moscow.

The 2013 season was even better for pair Makarova / Vesnina: two victories at the FedCup, the Australian Open semifinals, another title at the WTA Premier tournaments in Indian Wells, and also the ladies won their first Grand Slam title – the French Open.

In the tournament they did not drop a set and defeated the defending champions - the top-seeded Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci in the final.

Thus, Makarova and Vesnina became the second Russian pair to win a Grand Slam title. The first pair was Svetlana Kuznetsova and Vera Zvonareva who won the 2012 Australian Open.

After the victory at Roland Garros, Vesnina said:

We've been playing together since last year and, I think, we are a good team, we have great understanding.

After the victory at Roland Garros, Makarova said:

I'm very happy that today we've played with full concentration and fulfilled the plan for the match completely. This is great that we've won our first Grand Slam title.

Makarova and Vesnina's victory resulted in their clinching a berth in the WTA Finals, where they defeated Errani and Vinci again in semifinals but lost in the final.

The season 2014 has been highlighted for the Russian pair by their second Grand Slam title – the ladies won the US Open title, leading to them qualifying for the WTA Finals for the second straight year.

Lena suggested us playing in doubles before the Olympics. Frankly, I was lucky because she was in the top ten and could choose whoever she wanted. Before the Olympics, we managed to play only in three tournaments, in Madrid and Rome we made to the final and at the Roland Garros and Olympics – to quarterfinals. So we continue to play doubles together and this has already lead us to two Grand Slam titles.
